This is the picture I intended to post yesterday, but I could not bear it. In the morning I listened to “Democracy Now”, as usual. There was an interview with Elizabeth Kolbert about her new book The Sixth Extinction. The book’s premise, in a nutshell — we are on the leading edge of the 6th great extinction of flora and fauna on our planet. But this one is man-made. Now, this is not news to me. That was yesterday morning. Yesterday evening I had chosen this picture to post. Look closely and you will see the net next to this tiny creature, and it is in his mouth. I could not bear to look at this photo last night. Here is the interview, if you have the heart to watch it.

Sadly I think the perpetrators have the means to be more protected from the problems they create than the rest of us. At least in the short term.

Our only hope is the realization of how we are all connected. There is no duality, we are an integral part of nature, not separate or above it. I think your post was very important. It spreads the realization and compels people to action. Many feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem and think, “What can one person do that would make a difference?” What we need to realize is that if everyone did even just one little thing, it would add up over time and create a huge effect. Margaret Mead said it best: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” So let’s roll up our sleeves and do whatever we can.

I agree Eliza. Just one change — imagine a world where we all appreciated the oneness of all things, ourselves included, no higher and no lower. How transformative. No act would seem insignificant, whether for good or for ill. I agree that acting, and acting together, can really have an effect.
