Work And Play In San Diego

It’s been so long since I’ve taken any pictures, and even longer since I’ve taken some playtime. I’m taking a couple of classes at the local community college, and I have another big project going. But the biggest reason I’ve taken no pictures is that Southern California has been on a long slow roast all summer long, and I’ve been holed up in my air conditioned house for months. So, we took off Friday for San Diego, where it’s always so temperate compared to Los Angeles. We stayed at a hotel right on the water, to be as close as possible to the cool ocean breeze.

A pleasure boat marina glistens outside hotel windows, and beckons tourists for a leisurely walk. There we saw many people who make their livelihood along the boardwalk and in the marina.

The mighty aircraft carrier USS Midway has found a useful retirement in San Diego Bay.  What a huge boat! I didn’t go aboard, mostly because there was bound to be plenty of stairs, and I expected it to be stifling hot in there. Not my idea of fun.

Commissioned a week after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. A revolutionary hull design, based on the planned Montana-class battleship, gave it better maneuverability than previous carriers.
