One interpretation of serenity

    1. It is a wonderful place, Kristen. So many of my absolute favorite shots were taken here – at El Capitan State Beach in California. Thanks for your comment.

    1. Thank you Janet. I’ve never built one of these little cairns, but they always impress me when I see them. I like the fact that they’re so poised.

      1. Glad you didn’t! I almost re-posted my first post ever which was titled Serenity Beckons. It was a photo of my chair in the yard. But I think it is supposed to be a new post, not that anyone is too worried about that. 🙂

        1. I just checked out Security Beckons. It really is quite perfect for this challenge. Perhaps it’s supposed to be a new post, but WordPress frequently reminds us to recycle our older posts for new readers.

I love these little cairns, but I usually feel a bit intimidated when I pass them, as if I should understand all the lore around them before I attempt one. How silly is that? I did look up cairns in Wikipedia, and I was pleased to learn that they’re quite old and widespread and are used as trail markers. Apropos of serenity too, isn’t it?

    1. Thanks Gunta. And, thank you for that video — the cairns in that YouTube are quite amazing. I’ve seen still photos of some of the elaborate constructions, and I always wondered if there might be a bit of superglue helping the fancy ones. It appears that it’s all gravity.

I do like the sentiment that a human’s visit to nature should leave the landscape untouched, but at the same time, I like the small cairns as a way to remind us to maintain our poise and simplicity, while acknowledging that our presence here is temporary.
